What is neurodivergent affirming therapy?
Affirming therapy recognizes and honours the unique experiences of people who are neurodivergent. This includes those diagnosed as ADHD, AuDHD, autistic as well as those who identify with the characteristics, traits and/or challenges that are characteristic of neurodivergent people.
It’s not about fitting-in or better masking in a neurotypical world. We aim to create a safe space where strengths as well as challenges are met with compassion and understanding.
Historically therapy hasn’t always honored neurodivergence and many report previously feeling dismissed, pathologized and sometimes encouraged to hide aspects of who they are in order to appear more ‘acceptable’.
How is Neurodivergent therapy Different?
Individual differences respected. Neurodivergence is not seen as a disorder to be corrected. It is seen as a part of the rich diversity that exists between human brains.
Your full experience matters. Neurodivergence can bring both strengths and struggles. Both are real. Both are valid. Therapy is about creating space for all of it
You are the expert on your own life. Your experience is unique, your neurodiversity is a part of your experience not the entirety of you. Obstacles are real and they don’t always need to be reframed as a ‘superpower’.
Therapy moves at your pace. We adjust sessions to meet your needs. That might mean slowing down, taking breaks, turning off the camera, adding more or less structure and working with sensory sensitivities.
Why Does That Matters?
Affirming therapy is about creating a safe space where you don’t have to mask who you are. At the same time, it also respects your right to use strategies like masking when circumstances don’t feel safe.
Together, we can work toward a deeper understanding of your changing needs so you can feel more comfortable expressing them, advocating for them, and honoring them.
Therapy can also support you in choosing people and environments where you feel safe enough to be more authentic more often. When you’re in spaces where full authenticity isn’t possible, we can create room to process those experiences, find ways to protect your well-being, and discover healing outside of those environments.
How will we work together?
Whether you identify as neurodivergent or are simply exploring whether certain traits fit your experience, you can feel safe knowing you will be accepted exactly as you are.
Together, we can focus on what matters most to you.
Whether that’s building self-trust, easing anxiety, managing overwhelm, or creating strategies that truly support your well-being.
Everyone has a unique relationship with their brain.
For some, identifying as neurodivergent (ADHD, AuDHD, Autism) is an important part of who they are. For others, the label doesn’t feel as central, but they still want a therapist who understands and affirms their differences.
Wherever you are on that spectrum, this is a space where your experience will be respected and supported.
